The successor to now shut file-sharing site Megaupload has been revealed by controversial figure Kim Dotcom.
Dotcom previosuly outlined how he intends for his new site to avoid the legal wranglings that lead to Meagupload’s closure, and now he says the new site will go live on January 20th – a year to the day since the demise of his old site.
"The new Mega will not be threatened by US prosecutors," he said, according to the BBC. "The new Mega avoids any dealings with US hosters, US domains and US backbone providers and has changed the way it operates to avoid another takedown."
He claims that Mega’s holding page has already had millions” of hits, adding: "All FBI agents pressing reload hahaha… We see their IP addresses. LOL!!!"
However, Dotcom has also admitted that Mega may not remain a free service, with a note on the site explaining: "We have raised sufficient funds to cover the launch but we would like to provide Mega free of charge for as long as possible."
