Wii U to miss out on EA’s Star Wars games

It has been confirmed that the new Star Wars games coming from EA studios DICE and Visceral won’t be available on Wii U.

That’s because both are being built using EA’s Frostbite 3 engine – tech that has not been ported to Nintendo’s machine.

"Frostbite 3 has never been running on Wii U," DICE technical director Johan Andersson said on Twitter. "We did some tests with not too promising results with Frostbite 2 and chose not to go down that path."

Battlefield producer Patrick Bach has previously stated that the publisher wants to move away from low-spec machines”.

The implications for Wii U go wider than simply Star Wars, however. Eurogamer adds that 15 games are currently in development using the Frostbite 3 engine.

These include Battlefield 4, the new Mass Effect, Dragon Age 3, a new Need for Speed and a number of unannounced projects.
