ESL is powering PlayStation’s new tournaments feature

ESL will integrate its competitive gaming systems into PlayStation’s tournaments section on the PS4.

ESL will allow players to sign up and compete in many tournaments across multiple games on the PS4 with just a few button presses. Players can also check into tournaments and check their progress through the PlayStation and ESL Play apps.

NBA 2K17, Mortal Kombat X and Project Cars are the first titles available to compete in, although you can probably expect that to expand further in the coming months.

We’re incredibly excited to be able to offer this seamlessly integrated solution for the most passionate esports fans. ESL’s mission is to bring competitive gaming to fans around the world, and when doing so, to create an environment that allows them to fully focus on their gaming skills.” said Marcel Menge, Managing Director ESL Technology. In the partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment, we’re going to host hundreds of weekly tournaments for players from any corner of the world. Anyone who wants to try their hand at competitive gaming, can now easily do so across a wide variety of titles.”

Having simple tournament functionality on the PS4 is a good move from Sony, and shows that they are truly getting into eSports. They have after all secured the PS4 as the lead competitive platform for both Call of Duty and Street Fighter V. Nintendo could do well to learn from Sony, if they are going to go after eSports with the Switch.
