Nintendo and Future have announced the closure of Official Nintendo Magazine.
Its last issue – number 114 – will go on sale on October 14th. The mag first arrived in the UK in 2002, with Future assuming publishing duties from EMAP in 2006.
Nintendo will continue to speak directly to fans via Nintendo Direct, our social media and online channels and public events,” a statement released by the platform holder claimed.
Nintendo UK and Future will continue to work closely on future projects across Gamesradar.com, CVG, Edge, Kotaku UK and Gamesmaster.”
UPDATE: The ONM website will be closed on November 11th. The current plan is to redeploy ONM staff to other projects.
Current ONM subscribers will see their subscriptions automatically transferred to Gamesmaster, although they will have the option to cancel as long as they do so by October 17th.
A Q&A on the ONM website (which has since been removed) claims that the closure was a joint decision.
It was a joint decision,” it said. Nintendo has decided to direct efforts toward other communication channels to communicate with fans, and Future is focusing on a core of existing sites with the recently launched Kotaku UK providing a great platform for our wealth of Nintendo experts from ONM and the wider Future network. Combined they will continue to deliver the Nintendo expertise our readers have come to expect in exciting new ways
It also denied that the decision was linked to Nintendo's current market struggles or to the recent redundancies at Future.
The company also refused to comment on the futures of both Official PlayStation and Official Xbox Magazines.
