Legendary signs live-action Detective Pikachu rights

That didn’t take long – the rumoured deal between filmmaker Legendary and The Pokemon Company has been confirmed, according to reports.

Hollywood Reporter reckons that the first film to emerge from the partnership will be a live-action take on Detective Pikachu, a 3DS game of which was released in Japan in February.

Production has been fast tracked, presumably owing to the current Pokemon Go fever that is gripping the globe, with work to begin on the movie in 2017.

The site reckons that Netflix was also fighting for the rights before Legendary won out. The film will be distributed by Universal outside of Japan.

News of an approaching deal with legendary first emerged last week, with rumours that Max Landis has been signed as the writer.
