Nintendo (sort of) ushers in first Wii U/3DS cross-buy title

Sony’s popular cross-buy initiative has enjoyed a tentative debut on Nintendo platforms.

Lots of titles on PSN – including Flower, Fez, Luftrausers, Retro City Rampage, Divekick and many more – will once purchased on one PlayStation platform also be available to download on any other compatible PlayStation machines the owner has access to.

A new Nintendo Europe offer for buyers of Squids Odyssey is similar, although more limited.

Anyone who buys the 9.99 game on 3DS when it’s released later this week will also get a free copy for their Wii U, providing it’s registered under the same Nintendo Network ID.

Strangely, it appears that 3DS copies will not be handed out to those who buy the Wii U version. It also looks to be a Europe-only affair and there’s no sign of Sony’s cross-save compatibility either.

Still, it’s a start.
