Nioh PS4 demo lets users choose between resolution and framerate

An open beta for Koei Tecmo’s upcoming action game Nioh includes a graphical option typically more familiar to PC gamers.

The 4GB Nioh beta, which is available to download now on PSN in the UK, allows users to choose between two graphics modes – Movie and Action. The former prioritises resolution, offering nicer graphics. The latter, however, offers a higher framerate, at the expense of some visual detail.

This is the sort of luxury normally only afforded to PC gamers, whoa re able to tailor their experience either for higher-resolution graphics or smoother, more responsive gameplay. Console games typically favour graphics over framerate, although some console titles do aim for 60 frames per second.

It’s not yet clear exactly what changes the Nioh beta makes in order to up the framerate or the visuals. However, there is a comparison video from Gaming Dog, which offers a glimpse at both options in action:

Ready to die?” the game’s blurb reads, in what is surely a nod to the Dark Souls series which it is already being so openly compared to. Experience an early version of the newest brutal action game from Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo Games. In the age of samurai, a lone traveller lands on the shores of Japan. He must fight his way through the vicious warriors and supernatural Yokai that infest the land in order to find that which he seeks.

Players who clear a stage in this demo can download The Mark of the Conqueror, which will entitle them to a reward in the final game.”

The beta will remain available until May 5th.
