PS4 hits 50 million sales worldwide

Sony’s PS4 hit another sales milestone today, with the company announcing it’s sold more than 50 million units worldwide. This includes sales of the PS4 Pro, a more powerful version of Sony’s home console that supports ultra high resolution gaming, which launched last month.

The news comes after a stellar Black Friday period for PS4, where Sony reportedly sold through over two million consoles over the long weekend according to Ubisoft. Black Friday also marked the company’s most successful week of sales in the UK since the PS4’s launch in 2013.

It’s not just hardware that’s doing well, either, as Sony went on to say that its software sales have remained equally strong. More than 369.6 million copies of software titles have been sold worldwide so far, and that includes both retail copies of games and digital downloads through the PlayStation Store.

"We’re truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago," said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

"With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware such as the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR. We will continue to provide the best gaming experiences available through our ground-breaking software lineup and network services, as we focus on accelerating our business and expanding the PS4 ecosystem."

How this compares to Xbox One is a little harder to pin down, however. Microsoft has long since ceased reporting sales figures for its home consoles, but momentum for the Xbox One seems to have picked up in recent weeks, particularly after the launch of Microsoft’s slimmed-down Xbox One S back in August.

MCV previously reported in September that PS4 Slim figures had been slow compared to Microsoft’s newly released Xbox One S, with sales for Microsoft’s streamlined console up 361 per cent during each console’s launch weeks compared to the PS4 Slim.
