REPORT: Super Mario Run hits 78m downloads

Nintendo released its financial report for the nine months ending December 2016earlier today, and confirmed that Super Mario Run has been downloaded over 40m times in just four days following its worldwide launch on December 15th. The overall sales figures are not included in the briefing, but Bloomberg tech journalist Yuji Nakamura reports on Twitter (see below) that Super Mario Run has been downloaded 78m times since launch.

The figure allegedly comes from Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima, with Yuji Nakamura adding that over five per cent of the players have paid for the title’s full version (which sets consumers back 7.99 in the UK).

On Super Mario Run, Nintendo’s financial report only reads: On the smart device front, we released Super Mario Run, a new action game featuring Mario, in 150 countries and regions on December 15 (Pacific Standard Time). This title elicited a fantastic response, surpassing 40 million downloads in four days after the release.”

The report then confirms that the iOS title will launch on Android in March. This was announced earlier this January but Nintendo has yet to confirm the exact release date.

Previously, Nintendo announced at the end of December that Super Mario Run had been downloaded 50m times – which remains the latest official figure. After that, The Wall Street Journal reported that the title had reached 90m downloads between launch and January 4th. We’ll have to wait for an official update from Nintendo to finally know how well the title did so far.
