Yooka-Laylee multiplayer modes unveiled in new gameplay trailer

Playtonic Games has finally unveiled more details about Yooka-Laylee’s multiplayer modes. Revealed via a new gameplay trailer, the game will feature both co-op play and eight additional multiplayer arcade-style mini-games, allowing up to four players to compete head-to-head.

In local two-player co-op, a second player will be able to take control of the Bee Team, grabbing quills and catching butterflies for when player one are in need of a health or energy boost. They’ll also be able to foil traps and help their friend overcome tricky obstacles.

As for the eight multiplayer arcade games, these will be found in Rextro’s Arcade. Here, up to four players will be duking it out to earn themselves a place on the high score leaderboards. The games will also be available to play solo as well.

In the Glaciators brawler arena, for example, players will be competing to collect the most quills, while Blag the Flag is essentially a googly-eyed version of ‘capture the flag’. Gun-Let Run, on the other hand, is a shoot ‘em up mini-game, while Kartos Karting sees players jockeying for pole position on the racetrack. Jobstacle Course and Hurdle Hijinx, meanwhile, will put players’ platforming skills to the test.

Playtonic Games also said that these in-game arcade cabinets will be able to be ‘powered-up’ by special play coins that are located within Yooka-Laylee’s single player campaign. These are located within the mysterious book worlds and will give players the chance to win rare collectible Pagie items.

Yooka-Laylee launches on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac and Linux on April 11th. A boxed PS4 and Xbox One version will also be available from select retailers. Anyone who pre-orders the game will also get instant access to Yooka-Laylee’s Toybox mode, a self-contained sandbox mode that lets players mess about with the game’s platforming mechanics. A Nintendo Switch version is also planned for later this year.
