Ico Partners: Money raised by game Kickstarters more than halves in H1 2016

The amount of money generated by video game Kickstarter campaigns has fallen considerably for the first half of 2016 compared with that of 2015.

That's according to consultancyIco Partners, who reports that just $8.2m has been raised in the first six months of 2016 – a massive reduction on H1 2015's $20m-plus.

The firm reports that this is despite a similar number of video game projects being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. What is missing, Ico reports, is large projects.

Breaking down the amount of money pledged per tier indicates that lower tiers actually raised more than they did in 2015. But the top tiers – $500,000-plus – are massively down.

This is due to a lack of large projects such as Shenmue 3, Yooka-Laylee (pictured) and Bloodstained. Those raised 4.7m, 2.1m and 4.1m respectively.
