International Factfile 2016: Denmark

The Danish games market had revenues reaching $245m (188m) as of June 2016, according to data firm Newzoo. It is the 36th biggest market worldwide and No.15 in Europe.

Danish games industry trade body Interactive Denmark reported in its latest study that the industry's turnover had increased by 196 per cent during the 2009 to 2014 period, reaching 1.7bn DKK (around 197m) in 2014 – that was a 35 per cent growth compared to 2013.

This report also points out that export was up 12 per cent between 2012 and 2013, representing 66 per cent of the Danish games industry's turnover.

The number of companies involved in the games business has also increased in the country, jumping from 139 in 2013 to 190 firms in 2015, employing about 735 people.

Most of these companies are small studios though, such as Inside and Limbo developer Playdead, with only three firms employing 50 people or more. Amongst these big companies is triple-A developer IO Interactive – the studio behind the Hitman franchise – which is owned by Square Enix.

66 per cent of the Danish games companies are located in its capital city, Copenhagen, Interactive Denmark also reports.

Games funding in the country is supported by the Danish Film Institute, which created a ‘Games Scheme' aimed at strengthening computer games as a culture-bearing medium and securing better development andgrowth conditions for Danish computer games.”
