Call of Duty tops December boxed charts as games revenue dips 34% year-on-year

Last month was a disappointing period for UK games stores as money generated from physical software sales dipped 34 per cent.

170.8m was made from game sales for the December sales period (November 27th – December 31st) according to data tracker GfK Entertainment, down from 2015's 257.6m.

Meanwhile, 5.8m games were sold; a dip of 31 per cent on the 8.3m shifted during December 2015. This is due to a number of factors, including titles underperforming compared to their predecessors, the Black Friday sales period and the slow-down of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 software sales.

Furthermore, the December 2015 data started on November 22nd, meaning that it included the lucrative Black Friday sales period, which saw consumers spending 56m on 1.8m games for the week.

Additionally, GfK's December 2015 data ran until January 2nd, meaning it includes six weeks worth of data. The December 2016 chart, by comparison, only includes five.

Activision's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the best-performing title of the month for the second sales period in a rowcharting ahead of EA's FIFA 17. Third place goes to fellow EA title Battlefield 1. Watch Dogs 2 came in at fourth place.
