Epic shows off next-gen possibilities with new Unreal Engine 4 demo

Last year, Epic Games showed off the first demo of its next-generation Unreal Engine 4, titled Elemental. Today at GDC, it showed off another impressive demo – Infiltration, and a promising sign of what next-gen games hold in store.

The new Infiltrator demo was running on a Core i7 CPU-powered PC with Geforce GTX 680 GPU and 16 GB of DDR3 RAM, specs far superior than those of the PlayStation 4.

Interestingly, these are the same specs it used for the Elemental demo last year. That demo was shown at GDC running on a PS4 (watch it here), proving the engine’s scalability and multi-platform prowess.

While there seemed to be no cut corners in the PS4 demo, the console demo made use of a static global illumination technique for lighting as opposed to the Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination (SVOGI) lighting system, which it used last year. I’m not quite sure what either of those techniques is, but I’m guessing the one used in the PS4 demo isn’t as demanding on the hardware.

While Epic didn’t confirm that the Infiltrator demo could also run on the PS4, the fact that the Elemental demo was shown running on the PS4 in real-time does bode well.
