Mysterious reveal for The Phantom Pain; possible Metal Gear title

A mysterious trailer for The Phantom Pain at the Video Game Awards has raised lots of questions, but given few answers.

Firstly, the central character in the trailer, whose face is never properly revealed, bears a striking resemblance to Metal Gear Solid hero Solid Snake, and the character is also seen sneaking around for much of the trailer.

Secondly, the game is said to be in development at Swedish studio Moby Dick Studio, which has never been previously heard of. The studio’s CEO has been listed on its official website as Joakim Mogren, whose first name is an anagram for ‘Kojima’. This has led many to believe that this is another one of MGS series creator Hideo Kojima’s many unique approaches to generating hype.

Enforcing that notion further was the fact that at a Kojima Productions party in Los Angeles, several people wearing Moby Dick Studioand The Phantom Pain t-shirts were seen speaking with Kojima.

The trailer has led many to speculate that The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes, which was revealed earlier this year, could be part of an unannounced Metal Gear Solid 5.

Rumours and speculation aside, The Phantom Pain trailer also stood out for its stunning visuals and some strange fantasy elements. Giant whale in the sky, anyone?

The Phantom Pain is scheduled for release in 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3.
