90% of Google Play revenue since 2012 has come from games

The number of downloads on Google Play has increased by 3.8 times since 2012, while revenue has shot up 35.7 times, in the last four years.

That’s according to information from mobile analytics company App Annie, which also says that that games are the most popular category on the digital storefront.

90 per cent of Google Play revenue since 2012 has been generated by video games, while 40 per cent of downloads.

Overall, Google Play is outstripping Apple’s App Store – in 2015 Google’s storefront overtook the App Store in terms of downloads.

The best-selling Google Play games (by downloads) are:

1. Subway Surfers
2. Candy Crush Saga
3. Pou
4. Temple Run 2
5. Hill Climb Racing

Meanwhile, the games that generated the most revenue are:

1. Puzzle & Dragons
2. Clash Of Clans
3. Monster Strike
4. Candy Crush Saga
5. Game of War – Fire Age
