Games cause 8.2% rise in downloads on App Store and Google Play

Mobile games have caused an 8.2 per cent increase in downloads on Apple and Google's digital storefronts.

According to a report from intelligence firm Sensor Toweras reported by Venture Beat – 17.2 billion apps were downloaded in Q1 2016, which is an 8.2 per cent increase year-on-year.

Of this figure, 1.95 billion downloads were games from iOS and 4.7 billion came from Google Play.

To put into perspective the size of games on mobile, this category is 284 per cent larger than others on iOS and 404 per cent bigger than the next big category on Google Play.

Android is currently in the lead in terms of downloads, but iOS' is showing a faster rate of growth. The App Store saw a 14 per cent rise year-on-year, while Google Play rose less than one per cent.
