Warner Bros' Mortal Kombat X is likely to join the list of triple-A console games featuring microtransactions.

"We are not releasing any details on that yet," NetherRealm Studios marketing manager Brian Goodman told IGN when asked about the possibility. "Nothing to say about microtransactions yet."

The site speculates that the most likely implementation will be in conjunction with the Krypt, as featured in the previous game in the series. In 2011's Mortal Kombat, the Krypt contained a vast array of characters, costumes, special moves and art that could be unlocked with the in-game Koins currency.

In that instance the currency was earned in-game. Could it be that MKX adds the option to acquire it with real cash too?

If this does materialise, Mortal Kombat X would hardly be without company. It has become increasingly common for full-price releases to include the ability for players to drop more money in-game to advance progress or acquire items.

Examples include The Crew, DriveClub, Grand Theft Auto V, Forza Horizon, Gran Turismo 6, Assassin's Creed: Unity, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Mass Effect 3, PES 2015, Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, Ryse and Forza 5to name but a few.

Mortal Kombat X will be releases on April 14th.
