Post-credit scenes seem to have become a thing for lots of big-screen outings nowadays, but Rovio has put its own twist on it.
The company has urged viewers of The Angry Birds Movie to snub cinema etiquette, get out their phones and load up new release Angry Birds Action as the film draws to a close.
By going to see the The Angry Birds Movie in the cinema during the opening weekend and sticking around for the credits, audience members with the game open on their device get treated to more Movie Magic – a whole new area of the game to explore and an additional exclusive movie clip that can't be seen anywhere else but inside Angry Birds Action,” it said.
Movie Magic works in the game by detecting an inaudible digital watermark that plays only behind the end credits.”
MCV reported yesterday that the Finnish games giant is spending millions to make Angry Birds a smash hit once again.
Angry Birds can absolutely be as big as it was,” CCO Alex Lambeek told MCV. But now we are moving from being really hot in games to being a hot property in entertainment. It is a much broader space. We will have a wider appeal than we have ever had before. In that sense, we will be bigger than we have ever been before.”
We are experiencing a big resurgence in popularity with the movie coming out and appealing to a broader audience than purely through the games – though they are still core to our business. The movie will make everyone interested in Angry Birds and we'll be relevant to everyone. Of course, we have ambitions beyond the movie as well.
The Angry Bird Movie is going to be one of the biggest blockbuster animation films of year. It'll be right up there. Whether it is the biggest or not is hard to predict in the movie world, but the feedback we've had to the trailers and from the few people who have seen the film has been fantastic.”
