VIDEO: Here’s how the Xbox One friends app works

Microsoft’s Major Nelson has released a new video detailing the Xbox One’s friends app.

It reveals that as well as conventional friends functionality, Xbox One will also introduce the ability to ‘follow’ people – this effectively allows you to track their Xbox activity without the need for them to accept your friends requests.

So what’s the difference between a friend and a follower?” Nelson explained. They are all considered your friends on Xbox One, but the levels of privacy between the two are different. You can follow anyone you want and it’s completely up to them if they follow you back. You can also decide what information your followers can see about you.”

For instance, a gamer may want to follow one of the top drivers in Forza 5 and doing so will allow said driver to appear in their own leaderboards.

When two users both follow one another an additional level of information about usage is revealed.

Nelson also revealed that Xbox Live has over the last 12 months delivered over 20bn hours of gaming – that’s 17 per cent up year-on-year. He also says that 50 per cent more online console gamers use the Xbox 360 for playing online than the PlayStation 3”.
