NCsoft has confirmed precisely when its MMO WildStar will become a free-to-play title.
The game, once touted as a possible World of Warcraft beater, will drop its subscription charges on September 29th. Current subscribers are already able to access the closed beta of the free-to-play version of the game and will get exclusive items once the switch arrives proper.
”At the beginning of 2015, we outlined key points of focus for WildStar to help make this great game even better, focusing heavily on player feedback and bringing meaningful changes,” product director at developer Carbine Studios Mike Donatelli said in May.
We continue to deliver on those points and feel strongly that removing the subscription cost will give everyone who loves MMOs, or just wants to have an incredible gaming experience, a chance to try WildStar.”
Question marks about WildStar’s future have been flying around for a while now, with Donatelli in November insisting that the game most definitely has a future. Carbine itself was hit with layoffs a little over a year ago.
Lots of MMOs have switched from a subscription model to F2P including The Elder Scrolls: Online, Star Wars: The old Republic, The Lord of the Rings Online, DC Universe Online and Champions Online.
EVE, Final Fantasy XI and of course World of Warcraft remain as the most notable exceptions.
