World of Tanks ‘will lead free-to-play charge on console’

The Xbox 360 version of World of Tanks will be a free-to-play experience the console industry has never seen before, says developer Wargaming.

The firm announced its plans to bring the smash hit PC title to Xbox 360 at E3 in June.

And Wargaming’s senior product marketing manager Pat Alvardo says quality is the most important thing when creating a free game, something rival free-to-play consoles games have lacked.

In terms of free-to-play on console, there aren’t a lot of experiences yet that are at the quality that World of Tanks is at,” he told MCV. We are really bringing a triple-A, free-to-play game to the platform.

There are other companies doing free-to-play on console. But there’s not a lot of people in the business doing it like this. The industry is changing, people are trying to adapt to how consumers want content, and this is a great way of doing that."

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition is out later this year.
