Minecraft most-viewed games franchise on YouTube again in April

Mojang’s runaway success Minecraft continues to be incredibly popular on YouTube.

Videos featuring the title were viewed 3,900m times, with 99 per cent of these being fan-made content. Minecraft videos formed 34 per cent of the Top 20 franchises.

That’s according to a report released by research firm Newzoo and brand management company Octoly.

Other entrants on the chart include Grand Theft Auto in second place, with 1,390m monthly views, and popular horror title Five Nights at Freddy’s which raked in 1,170m views in April.

One of the biggest winners of the month was Mortal Kombat, which soared up nine places in the charts. Views rose 170 per cent month-on-month, driven by the launch of Mortal Kombat X.

According to the report, 98.2 per cent of views in the Top 20 were videos made by fans, meaning that a mere 1.8 per cent were produced by publishers and developers.

Minecraft also topped the YouTube rankings last monthand in February,and is the most-viewed games franchise on YouTube to date.
