Nvidia reveals 12GB Titan X, shows off VR Desolation of Smaug ‘Thief’ demo

A brand new GeForce Titan graphics card has been announced by Nvidia.

The company took to the GDC stage to reveal its Titan X, which packs a massive 12GB of video memory. Current high-end GPUs typically offer between 3GB and 6GB of VRAM.

Little else is known about the specs, although the card does pack 8bn transistors. That compares to 5.2bn in the current performance leader, the GTX 980, and 7.1bn in the old Titan Black. While the Black is based on Nvidia’s Kepler architecture, however, the X is built on the newer Maxwell design.

Showing off the card was a new virtual reality title produced by Weta Digital, Epic Games, Oculus and Nvidia called ‘Thief in the Shadows’ that sees players re-enacting the Smaug encounter from The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Oculus continues to work closely with Epic and Nvidia to deliver incredible, immersive virtual reality to gamers everywhere,” Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said. The advancements in Nvidia’s Titan X and Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, combined with the latest Oculus Rift hardware and innovative Oculus SDK features like asynchronous timewarp and late-latching, enable developers to reach new levels of performance, comfort and presence in VR.”

The card will be detailed at full at Nvidia’s GPU tech conference later this month.
