The PC version of Dead Space 3 will offer little in the form of graphical plusses over the console releases.
That's because developer Visceral Games felt it a bigger priority to make the game experience consistent across platforms rather than utilising the extra power afforded on many modern PCs.
[The PC version is] by no means any less important to us; it gets a lot of attention,” Steve Papoutsis told ShackNews. The PC is a very different platform. As developers, you want to deliver an experience that's as similar as possible on different platforms.
We continue to evolve our games as we develop them, but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience.
"At our studio, we've always made console games. The biggest thing is we want to make sure the quality of the experience is consistent across all platforms so we don't have one userbase saying it's better on their system."
There's of course value in console gamers – who will form the vast majority of Dead Space 3's buying market – not feeling short-changed in knowing that their versions aren't technically inferior to the PC SKU.
But at the same time, PC gamers will be rightly irked by the aging hardware of Microsoft and Sony holding them back. Games such as Far Cry 3 and Skyrim thrive perfectly well on console whilst still offering a superior experience on PC.
Roll on the next-gen, right?
