PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds hits 4m copies sold

A new IP from a previously unknown developer is currently on track to be one of the best selling games of the year.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which arrived with very little fanfare and virtually no marketing back in late March, has just passed the 4m copies sold barrier.

It had initially sold 1m copies in its first 16 days, and then hit 2m copies less than a month later. 3M copies was reached earlier this month.

An Xbox One release was confirmed at E3last week, along with console exclusivity.

Battlegrounds in an online multiplayer last man standing survival shooter with similarities to games such as DayZ and H1Z1's Battle Royale mode. However, while the famous zombie shooter took around four weeks to hit a million, Battlegrounds did so in half the time.

Battlegrounds drops players in an 8x8 kilometre island. Everyone starts with nothing, and must scavenge resources to conquer their opponents. It's a genre that has become extremely popular in recent years.

I've always wanted to create a standalone game based on the mod I created for the ARMA series, and working with [developer] Bluehole gives me the resources and creative freedom to build the experience I've always envisioned,” Greene said previously.

We have a great development team in place, and our goal is to create a realistic open world experience with the deep gameplay and strong combat mechanics.”
