Steam’s Early Access program has paid off for yet another studio, as UK-based indie developer Chucklefish has announced its upcoming title Starbound has exceeded 1m copies sold.
The studio’s Twitter account revealed the figure, which was gathered in just over a month of availability through the PC digital distribution giant. The game hits the milestone while still in its alpha stages. It’s yet to be announced when the full version will arrive.
The expansive sci-fi action-adventure title is (at least in someways) a spiritual followup to Re-Logic’s 2011 indie hit Terraria – though Terraria 2 has also been openly discussed. Terraria itself had surpassed 2m copies sold as of the beginning of 2013, and that total has likely been added to significantly, thanks to new platform releases and major discount promotions.
The game joins DayZ as recent Steam Early Access success stories. The standalone version of Dean Hall’s massively popular ArmA II mod has already cruised past 800,000 copies sold in its first 18 days on Steam.
