Blizzard holding back Overwatch’s Competitive mode until post-launch

The recently introduced Competitive Play mode in Blizzard shooter Overwatch does not feature in the new open beta and will not be re-launched until after the game has been released.

The mode was designed for those intent on engaging most seriously with the game, featuring a ranking system and leagues that track players across the month. Players are required to reach level 25 before being allowed entry in the first place.

However, Blizzard has now said that following feedback it intends to re-work elements of the mode before it is rolled out again at a later date after the game’s launch on may 24th.

We worked extremely hard to get Competitive Play in the game for Closed Beta,” game director Jeff Kaplan said. We’ve been reading feedback from the community and taking it all to heart. As a result, we’ve temporarily disabled Competitive Play for Open Beta so that we can rework the system and make it better.

Our plan is to bring back a newly re-designed version of Competitive Play sometime after Overwatch launches. Thanks for all of the feedback, and thank you for being patient with us while we work to improve the game.”
