Gold and Silver PS4s confirmed for the UK

Two new PS4 hardware colour options have been confirmed by Sony.

Following last week’s leak from US retailer Target, gold and silver versions of Sony’s machine have now been confirmed. The UK release date has been set for June 28th.

Each will include a 500GB hard drive and come with a matching DualShock 4 controller. The latter will be getting individual releases, too. They join the jet black and glacier white models that are already available over here.

Things are slightly different in the US where the gold option comes instead with a 1TB hard drive and the silver version seems to be missing altogether. The US is also getting a retail price promotion on PS4 hardware.

Of the new SKUs Sony says that they are sleek and stylish and absolutely perfect if you want to make a ‘metallic’ statement”.

In other Sony hardware news, Sony’s global development boss Shawn Layden has seemingly ruled out any possibility of a PlayStation Vita 2, speculation of which had seemingly sparked off following the early success of Nintendo’s Switch.

"To be honest, the Vita just didn’t reach critical mass in the US or Western Europe," he told Time. "I don’t know if it was that it was more technology people had to carry around, or more things to charge, or whether their phone or tablet were taking care of that. But once the content slowed in that pipeline, it became hard to keep the Vita as a going concern."

Of the Switch, Layden added that "it’s definitely what [the Nintendo] fanbase has been waiting for", but doesn’t really see it as a competitor. "When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family," he explained. "Quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side."
