Guerrilla Games Cambridge to close, Sony confirms

Guerrilla Cambridge is to close with all employees facing compulsory redundancy, Sony has confirmed to MCV. The move will not affect Guerrilla Games Amsterdam, who is currently working on Horizon: Zero Dawn and the mainline Killzone series.

Sony says the decision is regrettable”, but stated that by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development, (including continued work on PlayStation VR), we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players.”

The decision comes after a review of all SIE Worldwide Studios' current resources and projects coming to completion.

Having reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term, we have decided that in order to deliver on our strategic objectives, it is necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure,” Sony said in a statement. As a result, it has been decided that Guerrilla Cambridge Studio will close.”

Sony stated that it will try to reallocate Guerrilla Cambridge's staff to other projects and will assist them in any way we can” if appropriate opportunities [do] not exist within the company.” This includes speaking with local employers and other development companies.

This decision should not take anything away from the incredible games and services that Guerrilla Cambridge has delivered,” Sony added.

Formerly known as Sony Cambridge Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge has been part of SIE Worldwide Studios for over 19 years. Most recently, it was responsible for one of PSVR's stand-out launch titles, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, and has also worked on titles including Killzone Mercenary for the PS Vita, the MediEvil franchise, Primal and Ghosthunter.

It is the second UK-based Sony first-party studio to close in the last twelve months, asWorld Rally Championship, MotorStorm and DriveClub developers Evolution was also shut down during a similar review last March.
