A third entry in the cult Metro franchise was last night confirmed at E3.

Metro Exodus is due for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2018.

Set a quarter of a century after Earth has been ravaged by nuclear war, the few thousand survivors who persist scrabble for life in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro. They have however now been forced to flee on an incredible, continent-spanning journey across post-apocalyptic Russia in search of a new life in the East”.

Like the previous games, it's a story driven shooter this time set in an open immersive gameworld. Players will board the modified steam locomotive Aurora. Dynamic weather and a day/night cycle are also promised.

We are so proud to finally be able to reveal our next Metro game to the world, and would like to thank all the Metro fans for their patience,” 4A Games co-founder Andriy Prokhorov said. Metro Exodus has been in development for three years between our Malta and Kyiv studios, and represents our most ambitious project yet.”

Added the blurb: Deadly combat and stealth – scavenge and craft in the field to customize your arsenal of hand-made weaponry, and engage human and mutant foes in thrilling tactical combat.

Your choices determine your comrades' fate - not all your companions will survive the journey; your decisions have consequence in a gripping storyline that offers massive re-playability. A flickering candle in the darkness; a ragged gasp as your gasmask frosts over; the howl of a mutant on the night wind - Metro will immerse and terrify you like no other game.”
