Lara Croft's latest hasn't been a disappointment for its publishers, developer Crystal Dynamics has insisted.

Xbox-exclusive release Rise of the Tomb Raider launched the same week as Fallout 4 and charted at fourth, below Call of Duty and FIFA, leading some onlookers to express concern about its sales performance at retail.

Although official sales figures are yet to be revealed, game director Brian Horton took to the unofficial Tomb Raider forums to respond to concerns that the development team would be criticised for the game's fate.

There was suggestion in the thread that the reported sales numbers reflect poorly on the dev team,” he said.

Square [Enix]/Microsoft are happy with Crystal [Dynamics], Eidos Montreal and the game itself.

"As to the topic of sales, I'm unqualified to discuss it so I won't have anything else to say.”

Horton repeated that both Microsoft and Square Enix were ‘very happy' with the title's critical reception, which includes multiple nominations at the upcoming The Game Awards.

The dev team is not responsible for sales and therefore we look to reviews and releasing on time to gauge our performance,” he explained.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is due out on PC and PS4 next year.
