Steam reveals Most Played list of 2017, with Warframe, Payday 2 and Siege making the cut

Valve has named the nine Most Played Steam games of 2017 as part of Steam’s Best of 2017 awards, based on hard data gathered by the platform throughout the year.

Some housekeeping before we give you a rundown of the list. This list doesn’t actually compile the total players a game has accumulated over the year but instead the highest peak achieved by a game. Specific numbers also aren’t noted, with games listed by the milestone achieved by the game, with the top bracket being reserve for games that’ve hit over 100,000 simultaneous players.

As you might expect, each of the nine games that have achieved over 100,000 simultaneous players has a strong multiplayer element and there’s no real surprises. Payday 2, H1Z1, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Ark: Survival Evolved, Warframe and Rainbow Six Siege.

Each of the game’s is a fairly well respected heavyweights in multiplayer games from across the spectrum of price and production values.

Looking down into the game’s that have hit over 50,000 simultaneous players delivers more surprises. Football Manager 2017 and 2018 are here, in addition to Monolith’s Shadow of War, Divinity Original Sin II and Civilization V.

Towards the bottom of the list with over 15,000 peak players (but less than 25,000) also has a few surprises. Call of Duty: WWII is here, seemingly failing to capture the audience’s multiplayer imagination on PC as it has on consoles, nestled among classics like Portal 2, Rome II and Skyrim.
