Ubisoft refunds Might and Magic Heroes VII buyers after misleading marketing

Might and Magic Heroes VII fans are being compensated after Ubisoft admitted its ‘confusing’ marketing might have left some players disappointed.

The problems regard the release of the PC strategy game’s Collector’s Edition in North America.

Alongside a statue, tarot cards, a soundtrack and various in-game goodies, the Collector’s Edition was originally proposed as including a physical disc-based copy of the title.

This understanding was strengthened by an unboxing of the SKU live streamed on Twitch by Ubisoft, which showed a DVD case being taken out of the packaging.

Additionally, Ubisoft’s online store lists the Collector’s Edition as for ‘PC’, which the normal version of the game is specifically a ‘PC download’.

It seems, as spotted and detailed by one fan, that the advertising for Heroes VII was altered to instead promote the Collector’s Edition as including a digital copy – but this was presumably too late for those who had already ordered the game.

The confusion was exacerbated by the European Collector’s Edition of Heroes VII, which does indeed come with a physical copy.

Despite initially refusing to offer some refunds to customers who complained about the confusion, Ubisoft has now offered those affected a free game.

"Ubisoft regrets any confusion created by the marketing materials from our Might and Magic Heroes VII Collector’s Edition,” it said in a statement.

"We understand that some customers in North America were not aware the Collector’s Edition delivered digital versions of the game and soundtrack. Ubisoft apologises for any frustration and disappointment resulting from these items being in digital format vs. physical format.

We are accepting complete refunds from any dissatisfied customers and will be providing a compensation plan of one complimentary digital PC game for consumers that have already purchased the Might and Magic Heroes VII Collector’s Edition from the Uplay shop in North America.

Affected consumers will be able to pick one game of their choice from a selection including Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, The Crew, Toy Soldiers: War Chest Hall of Fame Edition and Zombi.”
