World in Conflict server shut-off postponed

Strategy title World on Conflict has, temporarily at least, been saved from the brink.

Sadly, all great things must come to an end and this is true even for World in Conflict. It is with sadness that we now inform you that all online services for World in Conflict will be shut-down as of October 6th 2015,” developer Massive Entertainment told players in August.

It was a very difficult decision to make but for several reasons it is not possible to keep the servers online anymore. We are forever grateful for the dedication and love you have shown over the eight years since release. We also want you to know that World in Conflict has a very special place in our heart and while there currently are no plans for a sequel, you never know what the future might hold.”

However, following much player upset Massive has now confirmed it has had a change of heart, although nothing is guaranteed as of yet.

We have decided to postpone the shutdown of Massgate and the servers as we are still investigating some potential community based solutions,” it stated. No promises, but we are looking into it. We want to make sure all options are exhausted before we shut it down.”

World in Conflict was published by the now defunct (and kind of resurrected) Sierra Entertainment in 2007 on PC. Massive was acquired by Ubisoft in 2008.
