Xbox VR games likely to be Scorpio exclusive

Next year’s arrival of Xbox Scorpio won’t quite be the level playing field some had hoped for, at least when it comes to VR.

Microsoft in its reveal of the new machine committed to cross-platform compatibility for both Xbox One and Xbox Scorpio for new titles. However, the extra processing oomph required for VR titles to perform adequately means that virtual reality titles might be the exception to the rule.

We said we’re not going to have console-exclusive games for Project Scorpio,” US Xbox Marketing Aaron Greenberg told Engadget. It’s one ecosystem – whether you have an Xbox One S or Project Scorpio, we don’t want anyone to be left behind.

Now, with the power and capabilities we have, we’ll be able to do high-fidelity VR. Now, that space, we don’t think of that as console gaming, we think of that as high-fidelity VR, and so with the VR experiences those will be new things that you will get on Project Scorpio.”

To be fair, this is pretty much in line with previous comments from the platform holder.

Speaking to MCV in June, head of operations Dave McCarthy explicitly linked Scorpio to Xbox’s future VR plans. And Xbox boss Phil Spencer had previously stated that neither PS4 nor Xbox One were technically equipped to support satisfactory VR – a fact that Sony contests, of course.
