A Chinese smartphone game called Fengkuang Laiwang has found itself in the centre of a data privacy scandal.
South China Morning Post reports that the title uploaded 36,000 private user videos to the internet without notification or permission.
The app itself allowed users to play charades by sharing video clips. However, said footage – which users presumed could only be seen by friends and others with whom they were playing – was also being captured and posted online on Youku.com, much of which featured users in various states of undress.
Developers Zhejiang Zhile Network and Beijing’s Hortor Soft have apologised for "failing to notify users that the video clips are uploaded”, although they claimed that the app was only doing so in order to facilitate future sharing.
Video sharing in the app has subsequently been deactivated and the video content removed.
