India tablet sales grew over 400 percent in 2012; PC sales flat

Tablet sales in India grew to 1.9 million units in 2012-13 from 360,000 the previous year, registering a growth of over 400 percent, the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT) has revealed.

Skyrocketing tablet sales have come at the expense of the PC, which saw 11.31 million units sold at a growth of just five percent. As much as 65 percent of the 6.77 million desktop PCs sold last year came from government, PSUs and educational establishments, indicating a consumer shift away from the desktop.

Notebooks, meanwhile, recorded sales of of 4.41 million, growing 10 percent over the previous year.

The end-user study, which was conducted by market research firm IMRB International, noted that despite the low penetration of tablets, the devices are "cannibalising" the consumer PC market.

The MAIT expects the PC segment to improve marginally in 2013-14, projecting sales of 12.11 million and a growth of 8 percent.

Smartphones too have seen impressive growth in India. Sales crossed 15 million units in 2012-13; that’s up more than 36 percent over the previous year’s 9.5 million sales.

Tablet and smartphones penetration has grown rapidly in India thanks to the availability of products at a wide range of prices, from high-end Apple and Samsung devices that sell for upwards of Rs 30,000 ($600) to entry-level Android devices from local players like Micromax and Karbonn that are priced as low as Rs 5,000 ($85).
