Minecraft’s retail price IS going up

The retail price of Minecraft is being increased in the UK, MCV can confirm.

Mojang last week revealed that the price of the Java PC version was being increased in some territories – not including the UK – but gave no indication of price rises elsewhere.

However, MCV has obtained confirmation from retail sources that June 1st will also see the game’s RRP upped on consoles.

The actual new in-store RRP is unclear at the moment, but the trade price of the title has been increased by between 10 and 20 per cent on home consoles and by well over 50 per cent on Vita.

MCV has so far only had confirmation of price rises on PlayStation formats. It’s not known whether the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of the now Microsoft owned property are also in line for an increase.*

One retailer has indicated to MCV that the increases on PS4 and PS3 will likely be absorbed and not passed on to consumers. It’s a different story on Vita, however. Another retailer stated that its prices will be going up on every format, without specifying whether this included Xbox.

The price rises may take a little time to come into effect, MCV understands, as many retailers are still selling through lower cost grey stock that has recently been widely available.

*UPDATE: MCV has received confirmation that the new price increases only apply to PlayStation formats.
