Pokken Tournament DX heading to Switch this September

A revamped version of the Wii U's Pokken Tournament is heading to the Switch later this year on September 22nd, Nintendo announced today. Pokken Tournament DX will include all content from the Wii U and arcade versions of the title, as well as a number of new features to entice newcomers.

As well as on-the-go battles, both in handheld mode and table top mode by lending a friend one of your Joy-Cons, five new Pokemon arrive as playable fighters, as well as a host of support Pokemon to give players more choice in their overarching strategy.

Team Battle mode is another new feature that lets you pick three Pokemon to battle with against friends, as well as Group Match for playing online. Daily challenges will also be on offer, as well as the ability to watch battle replays to help players hone their fighting skills.

You won't have to wait long to see the game in action, either, as Nintendo's confirmed the title will be playable at its E3 booth next week. The platform holder will also be inviting players to get involved in its E3 invitational tournament as well, making it the third social competitive title to be featured as part of Nintendo's E3 line-up. The invitational tournament will take place on Wednesday 14th June at 6.30pm UK time, and will feature eight YouTube and Twitch stars.

Pokken Tournament will be the first Pokemon title to come to the Switch - much to the dismay of fans who were hoping for a Pokemon Stars title based off Sun and Moon, which has now been revealed as Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon for the 3DS.

While not quite such a hit as its 3DS cousins, Pokken Tournament still made a good impression when it first launched in July 2015, debuting in the UK weekly charts at No.3. Co-developed with Bandai Namco, it also has a dedicated eSports following, with The Pokemon Company putting up $100,000 for its Pokken Tournament Championship Series last year.
