Age of Conan gets free-to-play relaunch

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures will be remodelled as a free-to-play game this summer.

The MMO will be be relaunched digitally as Age of Conan: Unrated, and will allow players to either play for free or subscribe for access to extra content. Funcom will introduce an in-game store that enables both free and premium players to purchase weapons, mounts and other items.

Funcom also confirmed that it is developing new locations, monsters and quests for the launch of Age of Conan: Unrated, some of which will feature characters and scenarios from the upcoming Conan the Barbarian movie.

With over 1.4 million copies sold, glowing reviews for both the core game as well as the expansion, and a healthy player base ever since launch in 2008, there is no doubt that Age of Conan has been a true success story for Funcom,” said the firm’s SVP of sales and marketing Morten Larssen.

Now we turn to another chapter in this story as we thrust Age of Conan Unrated into the world of free-to-play games, a gaming space that is becoming rapidly more popular and profitable across the board.”
