Amazon's Fire Phone has sold fewer than 35,000, report claims

The newly launched Amazon phone may be off to what can only be described as a very slow start, new numbers suggest.

Amazon’s Fire Phone was revealed in June and faced a chilly media reception from the off. Now some stat analysis from The Guardian suggests that consumers have been just as frosty.

Data from ad network Chikika says that the Fire Phone claimed a US market share of between 0.2 per cent and 0.015 per cent for the 20 days after the machine’s release. With Comscore pegging the total number of US smartphone owners at 173m, that equates to around 26,400 Fire Phones in use.

Taking the fact that Android handsets tend to under-index in Chitika, that figure could perhaps be raised to 33,000.

Why has the device failed to take off? Some say the $200 price tag hasn’t helped while others blame the handset’s AT&T exclusivity. There are also big questions to be asked of what consumer appetite exists for the ‘new’ features the Fire Phone brought to the table.

Of course the largest issue may be that with big players such as Samsung and Apple already firmly entrenched, any new entrant into the market faces a very stiff challenge.
