Battlefield 3 console compromises explained

EA owned developer DICE has named a few of the compromises it has had to make to get the visually spectacular Battlefield 3 running on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Battlefield blog reports that both console versions will have a resolution of 720p and run at 30 frames per second. In comparison, the PC SKU – which will understandably have a higher spec – will run in full 1080p and at 60fps.

How this compares to its rivals depends on how one chooses to measure it.

The Call of Duty games run at 60fps on consoles but have a sub-HD resolution. However, recent release Crysis 2, which is regarded as somewhat of a graphical powerhouse on consoles, runs at 720p and 30fps.

DICE’s Frostbite engine also offers a host of other benefits such as destructible scenery and larger maps.

However, speaking on Twitter the Digital Foundry tech blog described recent Battlefield 3 PS3 footage as "sensational".
