Black Ops sales pass $1bn

Activision's November release Call of Duty: Black Ops has now generated revenues in excess of $1bn.

It hit the milestone in just six weeks on the market.

The achievement is just the latest in a long line of impressive accomplishments by the game. In its first week in the UK the game sold 1.4m units, grossing £58m in the process and bettering its predecessor Modern Warfare 2 by 14 per cent. It took $650m worldwide in its first five days - $100m more than MW2.

The publisher added that 600m hours have been logged online, with Microsoft saying that the average Xbox 360 owner boots up once a day playing for over an hour at a time.

“In all of entertainment, only Call Of Duty and Avatar have ever achieved the billion dollar milestone this quickly,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick stated.

“Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed Call Of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records.”
