Byron returns to review Report

Two years on from the now infamous Byron Report on video games age ratings, TV presenter Dr Tanya Byron is to return to her work and review the progress that has been made since her set of proposals in 2008.

The enthusiastic and joined-up response from ELSPA members following the original review enabled us to work very effectively at addressing the recommendations, and was instrumental in our industry being recognised with its own working group within the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS),” an ELSPA statement reads.

Tanya is currently meeting UKCCIS officials and industry stakeholders to assess progress, and will report to the Prime Minister at the end of March.”

One element of Byron’s work that clearly will not have been implemented is of course her recommendation that the BBFC should assume responsibility for UK age ratings on games – the Government subsequently opted to stick with PEGI, granting it new legal powers in the process.
