After a week of fierce rumours, the resolution disparity between the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts has now been officially confirmed.

The game’s producer Mark Rubin took to Twitter last night to say that while both versions run at 60 frames per second (as is traditionally the way with Call of Duty) only the PS4 release will work natively at 1080p.

The Xbox One release will output natively at 720p, although of course the Xbox One hardware will upscale this image to 1080p.

“Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven’t had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we’re 1080p upscaled from 720p,” Rubin wrote. “And, we’re native 1080p on PS4.

“We optimized each console to hit 60fps and the game looks great on both. Still on the road, but glad to see the great reception to Extinction.  Can’t wait for next week's launch.”

It was confirmed earlier this week that rival shooter Battlefield 4, which is out in the UK tomorrow, runs at 900p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One.

What this doesn’t necessarily mean is that PS4 will enjoy a lifetime’s worth of technical superiority over Xbox One. While it appears that Sony’s machine does have a technological advantage, at this early stage discrepancies could just as easily be down to early SDK niggles with development software.
