Conflicting reports about the fate of the Wii U 8GB Basic

The future of the entry-level Wii U 8GB Basic SKU is shrouded in confusion this morning.

Yesterday it was reported that the SKU was due to be pulled from US retailer GameStop, with stock being returned to Nintendo.

However, Nintendo of America’s senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta has told Polygon that the machine is NOT being recalled.

"There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware," he stated. "To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available."

What that does not address, however, are the claims about GameStop. And indeed, CVG has word from a source within the retailer” that it IS going to stop selling the 8GB machine later this month.

Pre-owned 8GB models will remain on sale.

Yesterday Nintendo UK told MCV that the machine will remain on sale on these shores, although MCV has learned that some retailers are to significantly reduce the shelf space it allocates to Nintendo’s machine.
