Devolver Digital wants to make a new Seaman

Sega curio Seaman could be in line for a resurrection from indie publisher Devolver Digital.

Devolver CEO Fork Parker took to Twitter to tell Sega that it wanted to make a new game in the series before directly approaching its creator Yoot Saito. Saito replied to ask about formats, suggesting there’s at least an element of interest.

Seaman was originally released on Dreamcast back in 1999 and despite being released in North America a year later was never release din Europe.

It came with a microphone that clips onto the Dreamcast’s controller and allows players to interact with Seaman – who is a fish with a man’s face voiced by Leonard ‘Spock’ Nimoy – using their voice.

The game is probably best thought of as a kind of virtual pet, with player’s guiding Seaman from birth through to his eventual release into the wild. It’s actually all quite touching.

A sequel was released on PS2 in 2007, topping the Japanese charts for one week.

In 2012 it was reported that Nintendo was interested in resurrecting the series for 3DS, although nothing concrete has yet been announced.
