Dragon Quest XI hits 2m sales in Japan

Splatoon 2 may have shot to the top of the Japanese weekly charts and become the fastest-selling Switch gameat the end of last month, but according to the latest data from Famitsu, even Nintendo’s family friendly shooter compete with the might of Square Enix’s Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which took the No.1 and No.2 spots last week after just two days on sale.

Surprisingly, it was the 3DS version that came out on top, selling 1.13m units. The PS4 version wasn’t far behind, though, selling just over 950,000 to bring its combined total to just over 2m copies. For reference, 2009’s Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for the Nintendo DS sold 2.34m during its opening week. That certainly bodes well for its western release next year, which was confirmed earlier this week.

As a result, 3DS sales soared, prompting a 340 per cent rise in hardware sales to a massive 127,000 units across the entire family. The PS4 also enjoyed an uplift last week, leaping 240 per cent to 94,000 units across the range, bringing its cumulative total in Japan to just over 5m since launch.

Splatoon 2, meanwhile, slipped to No.3, but still managed to sell another 129,000 units, taking its cumulative total to just over 800,000 units. The title also spurred Switch sales to reach an impressive 106,000 units.

Other new entries last week included Spike Chunsoft’s Kenka Bancho Otome: Kanzenmuketsu no My Honey, which debuted at No.8, and iMel’s Wagamama High Spec, which made it to No.10.
