EA has canceled its annual collegiate American football title through at least next year.
EA Sports’ Cam Weber confirmed the news in an EA blog post, stating that the publisher is evaluating our plan for the future of the franchise.”
In related news, The New York Times reports that EA has settled a string of student athlete lawsuits – agreeing to pay $40m total to be divided up amongst the plaintiffs.
"[EA has] been stuck in the middle of a dispute between the NCAA and student-athletes who seek compensation for playing college football," Weber said – prior to the news of the settlement.
Weber explains that while EA has worked to settle all of its legal issues, college football conferences including the SEC, Pac-12, and Big Ten have withdrawn their support from the latest entry in the series.
The NCAA already pulled its support from the series in July, and EA has since struck a three-year deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company to create college football games sans any NCAA trademarks.
